“That it is better 100 guilty persons should escape than that one innocent person should suffer, is a maxim that has been long and generally approved.” - Benjamin Franklin
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. Charles J. "Zeke" Goldblum
On the evening of Sunday, February 9, 1976, George Wilhelm was brutally murdered on the exposed top deck of a parking garage in downtown Pittsburgh. He had been slashed and stabbed 26 times. When police arrived at the scene, Wilhelm was still alive. Wilhelm told police that "Clarence Miller did this to me." This dying declaration was supported by all the physical evidence.
Despite this, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prosecuted Charles J. "Zeke" Goldblum as the assailant. Goldblum was a lawyer and the son of a prominent Pittsburgh Rabbi. On August 30, 1977, a jury convicted Goldblum of the Wilhelm murder and other crimes.
Zeke Goldblum has now been in prison for 30 years for the murder of George Wilhelm, even though his claim of innocence is supported by the presiding judge at his trial, The Honorable Donald Zielger, the original trial prosecutor in the case, F. Peter Dixon, Esquire, and three of the world's leading forensic experts: Dr. Cyril Wecht, Henry Lee, Ph.D., and Dr. Michael Baden.
Although this was a big case at the time, the police and coroner's files have all disappeared without explanation.
